EU Cookie Directive

The new EU cookie law that came in to force on 26th May 2012 has caused lots of discussion. From that date all websites must obtain explicit consent before leaving behind any cookies (reading files) on user's computers and the use of such cookies needs to be made obvious to users.

It's not obvious though how this is going to be policed and also apparent that many 'official' websites are as yet still to comply. Many appear to be waiting on 'test cases' to start appearing in the courts before making a move.

It may be difficult for you to work out if your website uses cookies that are deemed "non-essential" but in simple terms:

Essential cookies that at needed to ensure that the website works correctly (e.g. cookies required for customers to check out and buy products) do not require an 'opt-in/opt-out' procedure.

Non-essential cookies which includes those from advertising, affiliate programs and analytics (e.g. Google Adsense and Google Analytics) DO REQUIRE an 'opt-in/opt-out' procedure.
